5 paint colors that are stressing you out

With our country in the grips of some life altering changes you may be feeling rather stressed. Just turning on the news or scrolling social media can raise your blood pressure and bring on a headache. Its been said repeatedly that our homes are our sanctuary and we should take the steps to actually make it feel like one. Now is the time to consider how your home’s colors may be adding to your anxiety. While you may have noticed that certain colors alter your mood, you may not realize that color affects your subconscious as well. Certain cultures use color to promote health and wellness. Known as chromotherapy, color and light are used to restore imbalances in a persons physical, mental, emotional or spiritual energy. Here are my tips on colors to avoid and the best alternatives if you want to create an oasis at home.

Yellow: Often associated with happiness, yellow can also activate the anxiety center of the brain. Bright yellows, especially neon shades, should be used sparingly as an accent. Try buttery, yellows that remind you of summer days or deep golds that connect you to a sense of the past.

Benjamin Moore Seahorse

Red: Studies have shown red rooms increase our heart, respiration and blood pressure rates by activating the pituitary gland. Red is a showstopper, making it a powerful design tool for creating drama. Used in excess though it will inhibit relaxation and should be kept out spaces you want to chill out in. Shades of peach and coral will still stimulate creativity and interpersonal interactions without the revved up feeling associated with red.

PPG Hush Puppu
PPG “Hush Puppy”

Black: Talk about dark and gloomy. While black rooms can be so chic, they will do little to make you feel uplifted day in and day out. Try instead cozy charcoal grays which can still feel dramatic though less oppressive than a true black.

Farrow and Ball Plummet
Farrow and Ball “Plummet”

White: On the opposite end, stark white feels clinical and not at all relaxing. Opting for a warmer white, can still feel clean and modern while producing a relaxing vibe.

Sherwin Williams Alabaster

Green: Popular yellow greens make fantastic accent colors especially when combined with neutrals, however steer clear of these bright yellow greens as they can be mentally overwhelming. While green has been well documented as a relaxing color to be around, stick to softer tones that lean more blue green like Sherwin Williams “Sea Salt”

How To Choose Paint Colors To Sell Your Home

Are you downsizing or relocating to a new city in 2020? There are lots of tips out there advising sellers on how to make their home appealing to prospective buyers. On the top of the list is the interior color palette. Don’t let your home sit stagnant on the market because of some questionable paint choices. Here is our color guide to getting the most for your investment.

Avoid Dark Colors

While you love your dramatic dark chocolate living room, others may think it feels too cave like. Lighten up dark rooms as much as possible so rooms appear spacious.

That bright turquoise accent wall in the kitchen looks great with your retro dining chairs however possible buyers will not appreciate your bold choice. Paint feature walls the same color as the rest room.

Remove Wallpaper

Wallpaper has enjoyed a renaissance over the last few years and as a designer it is a favorite design tool. When selling a house though, you are better off taking down the wallpaper and painting. The only exception may be in the powder room especially if it is a current pattern trend and is in excellent condition.

Stick to Neutrals

It’s good practice to stick to a neutral scheme throughout. The goal is to create a blank canvas so people can envision themselves living there. A neutral palette doesn’t necessarily mean white walls though. Depending on your furnishings choose either shades of gray or taupe for an updated look.

Pantone Color of the Year: Ultra Violet

From lavender to plum I am smitten with purple and am thrilled to see Pantone’s 2018 color of the year pick:

18-3838 Ultra Violet

According to Pantone, Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.  Purple has also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance.   Ultra Violet has a mystical, spiritual quality attached to it as it is often associated with mindfulness practices such as meditation.

In today’s interiors, purple is a surprisingly versatile hue.  It can be read as either warm or cool depending on the formula of red and blue.

Five stunning shades of orange

Orange is an intense, livable color that shouldn’t be relegated to just Halloween.   Orange is a blend of yellow and red that can range from the softest peach to a hot cayenne.   Research suggests that orange stimulates activity and appetite and encourages socialization.  Since it pairs beautifully with other colors it can be used to create any number of stylish iterations.

Six expert painting tips

Use these professional, no fail tips when you embark on your next interior painting project.

Give it a test run:  Paint several large samples on the wall around the entire room.   Never paint several sample colors side by as your eye will blend all the colors together.  If you are considering several shades, isolate each one to get an accurate read on how the color looks. See how it appears in all light levels including at night and on overcast days before deciding.
