Get the Look: Art Nouveau

Flowing curves, organic forms, and plant-inspired motifs characterize the Art Nouveau style. Look for items with highly stylized designs in lighting, furniture and many other home interior products.

Design School: Art Nouveau

Introduced as the first new decorative style of the twentieth century at 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, Art Nouveau (1890-1914), evolved from a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and the loss of hand crafts.  Organic forms, inspired by nature, dominate this brief but brilliant design period with distinctive intertwining “whiplash” curves and graceful sinuous lines.

Considered a total design style, Art Nouveau’s undulating and flowing forms are found in architecture, interior design, painting, sculpture, and house hold objects.

Everyday objects became works of art as seen in Hector Guimard’s Paris Metro entrance designed in cast iron.

New forms of artistic expression such as art glass became popular.  American designer, Louis Comfort Tiffany, is famous for his stained glass windows.

The Tassel House in Brussels was designed by Victor Horta in 1983.  Considered to be the finest example of  Art Nouveau architecture and design in Belgium, Horta designed every detail including woodwork, flooring, iron work door handles and furnishings.

Agostino Lauro created a harmonious whole in the parlor of a villa in parlor in Sordevolo, Italy.  A fashionable designer, Lauro designed furniture in the “Stile Floreale”-the Italian version of Art Nouveau.

Art Nouveau is still viable today, for the movement that promoted the widespread notion of beautiful design can be seen in the design of this custom staircase

Design School: Arts & Crafts

No.  It’s not like those activities you did at summer camp way back when.  Rather, the Arts & Craft movement (1860-1910) in design was a rebellion to the mass-produced, machine-made products that were so prevalent in the Victorian Era.  One of the  movements biggest proponent was art critic and theorist John Ruskin, who believed, that industrialization created a dehumanizing effect between the designer and manufacture.

Another leader in the Arts and Crafts movement, designer William Morris, sought to unite all the arts with in the home basing his designs on medieval, natural and folk motifs by means of traditional craftsmanship.  His company created wallpaper, textiles, furniture and stained glass to be used in the home.

Furniture maker Gustav Stickley constructed his pieces with integrity and pride marking his items with the Flemish phrase: Als Ik Kan – “to the best of my ability”

Interior colors were developed around the true color and texture of natural materials.  Interior color schemes were harmonious with little contrast.  Hunter green was originally created by Dard Hunter, an important Arts and Crafts designer.

A precursor to modernism and contemporary design, elements of the Arts and Crafts movement is seen in many of today’s interiors.

New project-Outdoor Room

With the Charleston temps dropping ever so slightly over the last few weeks, we are really getting to enjoy the great weather the Lowcountry is known for.  Spending time and entertaining outside is a tradition in the South and we love our outdoor rooms.  It seems from the Facebook comments that most appreciated a fully outfitted space for those al fresco moments.

I just redid a screen porch for long time Kiawah clients and here are some photos of the results.

Recliners-Beauty or Beast?

Recliner.  One word that sends shivers down the spines of even the most intrepid of designers.  Those big, overstuffed, puffy, micro fibered covered, behemoths that many insist are the ultimate in style and comfort.  Seriously?  You know we can do so much better than that!

If you are like me, not only does the man of the house enjoy his reclining domain but so does the dog of the house.  Fear not!  Furniture makers have heeded the siren’s call and here is a sampling of some real beauties to keep the peace:
