Fun with (faux) fur

I know-you must think I’m crazy. The suggestion to add fur to your décor may seem ridiculous when you have furry children. Since we have two dogs and two cats shedding fur in copious amounts, I often think of setting up a loom and knitting some sweaters with the hopes that pet fur apparel may be the next new fashion trend. But seriously….faux fur can be a marvelous decorative accent.

Just look at these wonderful throw pillows

And who wouldn’t want to cuddle up on a chilly night with this coyote faux fur throw

And don’t forget about an area rug in a faux lamb dark chocolate.

Recliners-Beauty or Beast?

Recliner.  One word that sends shivers down the spines of even the most intrepid of designers.  Those big, overstuffed, puffy, micro fibered covered, behemoths that many insist are the ultimate in style and comfort.  Seriously?  You know we can do so much better than that!

If you are like me, not only does the man of the house enjoy his reclining domain but so does the dog of the house.  Fear not!  Furniture makers have heeded the siren’s call and here is a sampling of some real beauties to keep the peace:

Wallpaper is Hot!

Our Facebook question of the day was paint, wallpaper or faux finish on your walls?  I’m curious to see how many of my friends actually like wallpaper.   As a designer I encourage my clients to use wallpaper especially in baths and laundry rooms.

Check out this powder room on Daniel Island where we used a Seabrook wallpaper.  The subtle design complements the decorative tile.

Design White Out

It’s hard to imagine spring when we are in the midst of our Charleston summer.   However, New York fashion week wrapped up on Thursday and many of the runways seemed to be in a white out.  I’m sure the designers were thinking cool, soft whites, while the temps soared outside their design studios.  The result a whole lot of marshmallow and iceberg hues to cool us all down.

So how do you incorporate this hot hue into your home?  If you’re like me, the thought of a white sofa covered in dog fur is not the ultimate in chic.  Back in the day, the charming spring ritual of changing out the rugs and covering the damasks in white cotton duck was a must in the South.  Why not try it for yourself with some washable slip covers to bring on the nostalgia:

If this still seems like a maintenance nightmare you can always go with the white walls and use color in the furnishings like we did on a Folly Beach project:

Regardless of how you use white-it will never go out of style.

Designer Dog Beds

Welcome!  Hampton and I our pleased to launch our Black Dog Design Blog.  We want to share our thoughts on interior design, entertaining, food, and general Charleston living.

What could be more fitting then to kick things off with a feature on designer dog beds!  All dog owmers have them-those dirty, hideous look pillows lying about that we think our dogs should lie on.  Of course, since most dogs consider themselves far superior they would prefer to lounge on the sofa or better yet your bed.

Why not treat them like the King and Queens they think they are with this fabulous creation:

Handpainted with paws and dancing dog bones this bed would make a statement in any decor!

I know Mr. H would enjoy snoozing away on this:

And this one is certainly fit for a princess:

But seriously, a comfy floor pillow may be all you need to keep them off the sofa-just don’t forget the monogram!
